Wye Valley Walk

Trekking the Wye Valley Walk

Wales Walking Holidays offer packages along the amazing Wye Valley Walk, a 136 mile (218 km) long distance footpath, which follows the splendid River Wye from its mouth as it joins the Severn Estuary near Chepstow, Monmouthshire to its source near Plynlimon in mid Wales.

A moderate walk,  it takes you along the densely wooded forests and ravines of Monmouthshire and the Forest of Dean. Then though the countryside and apple orchards of Herefordshire, through five counties as it meanders through the hills, mountains and open moorland to Powys in mid Wales.

The River Wye is considered one of the best rivers for salmon fishing in the UK, ensuring  sightings  of herons, kingfishers and otters along the trail.  You will also encounter red kites in the area around Rhayader as well as peregrine falcons around Yat Rock.  The Wye and its banks are also designated as a Site of Special Scientific interest (SSSI).

With connections to Wordsworth, Turner, Coleridge and Thackeray, the walk passes through market towns like Chepstow, Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye, Hay on Wye, Builth Wells and  Rhayader.  Hay-on-Wye, the "book capital", the city of Hereford and the Mappa Mundi  and Tintern Abbey are all on this fascinating walk.
